Bonded Restorations

Fillings

We are a mercury-free practice. However, many people still have silver/mercury fillings from years past in their mouths. These fillings are not particularly pleasing to the eye, and we know that by unavoidable design, silver/mercury fillings ultimately result in a weaker tooth structure. Porcelain inlays and composite resins create fillings that are not only beautiful (or unnoticeable) but also add strength to weakened teeth. These restorations are esthetically pleasing and very strong thanks to new bonding technologies.

Bonding

Bonding can be used as a restorative procedure for teeth that are chipped, cracked, discolored or misarranged, and is an alternative to veneers.

How does it work?

Composite resin liquid is applied in the chipped area.  Once the liquid sets, a porcelain-like material is applied, and the restoration is trimmed and polished to natural appearance.
Considerations: the bonding procedure is completed in a single office visit. However, since this restoration is not as strong as natural tooth enamel, it may need to be polished or repaired after several years of service. Bonding typically lasts from 5-10years before repair or replacement is needed.
A bonding light hardens the resin, which is then smoothed and polished.

Considerations

The bonding procedure can often be completed in a single office visit, and can improve the appearance of a tooth significantly. However, since the bonding material used is not as strong as your natural tooth enamel, it is more likely to stain, chip or break than natural teeth. Bonding typically lasts five to ten years before repair is needed.
